The British author's most famous work of fiction, a historic novel set in a poor mining community in New South Wales. The work was quickly adapted into the 1941 film, directed by John Ford, which famously beat out both "Citizen Kane" and "The Maltese Falcon" for the Academy Award for Best Picture.
