£400 - £600
On the Origin of Species - Charles Darwin - 1860 - Second Edition Fifth Thousand (John Murray). Publisher's dark green cloth hardback with decorative gilt to spine and blind-embossed decorative borders to boards. List of Mr. Murray's Works at rear. Name inscription, light ageing but pages clean. Sadly, as reflected in the estimate, this volume is in a poor state with top and tail serious damage to the spine ends. Side seam with front board split to centre. Boards generally marked, stained and scuffed/bumped. Both boards pulling from page block, attached by webbing reinforcers only to front and cracked, exposing webbing to rear. Some page blocks pulling within the book. This would be an ideal re-binding subject, due to the clear value in doing so.
