All published by Ernest Flammarion. All are illustrated and some with fold-out maps. Only lightly scuffed corners and minor scuffs elsewhere prevent a Near Fine grading for this impressive set. Provenance: This lot was amongst a collection from the house of a wealthy French family who lived in the 16th arrondissment of Paris, known for ornate buildings and wide boulevards and a favourite of Parisian high society. The gentleman who purchased them was born in 1877 and spent the war years in the same house, having sent his wife children to stay in the Pyrenees to avoid the Nazi occupation of Paris. He was unable to get out in time but was fortunate enough to be able to sit out the occupation, keeping these and all other books in the collection safe from the Nazis.
