Fine Binding. Condition: Good. No Jacket. James Fittler, R.A.S. (illustrator). Corrected from the First and Second Editions Size 9" x 5¾", 214 pages plus 12 pages of publisher's advertisements. Tan leather binding with ornate gilt leafed scrolls and frames on the front and back covers.Spine is complete with top and tail wear and small loss. Leather is cracking. Ornate gilt frames in the compartments with nautical anchors in patterns of five. Other gilt decoration and lettering. Rubbed and small loss in places. Boards generally marked lightly and edges and corners rubbed and bumped. With steel plate engravings by James Fittler, R.A.S. from the paintings of Nicholas Pocock, esq. Marbled endpapers clean with paste down name plate to rear inside board for Willian H Miller And signed by the same with 'Falmouth 1826' on the pre-title page. Whilst it cannot be proven this is the same William Miller, Publisher of this volume, it cannot be discounted either. Pages generally clean with light ageing. Marbled page block edges. William Falconer (1732-69) was lost at sea 7 years following the publication of the first edition of this work. Size: 5¾" - 9¾" tall. Additionally, photocopy sheets of the history of the 'Penelope' within the volume on the back of which is a manuscript history of Peter Proctor Esq.The same Capt. Peter Proctor R.N. whose name is inscribed on the title page. A very interesting edition of this book for various reasons as described.
