Leather spine with raised bands and gilt detailing. Marbled boards. Edges and corners scuffed with light spine end wear. Coloured endpapers. Pages clean and tight with ageing to edges. Provenance: This lot was amongst a collection from the house of a wealthy French family who lived in the 16th arrondissment of Paris, known for ornate buildings and wide boulevards and a favourite of Parisian high society. The gentleman who purchased them was born in 1877 and spent the war years in the same house, having sent his wife children to stay in the Pyrenees to avoid the Nazi occupation of Paris. He was unable to get out in time but was fortunate enough to be able to sit out the occupation, keeping these and all other books in the collection safe from the Nazis.
